What is Oklahoma City best known for? 

Oklahoma City — often called OKC — is the capital and largest city in the state of Oklahoma, known for its western heritage, innovative spirit, and friendly atmosphere. It’s also recognized as the Horse Show Capital of the World and home to one of the world’s largest livestock markets. OKC is also the Softball Capital of the World. Our world-class softball complex is home to the annual NCAA Women's College World Series and will host the LA28 Olympic softball competition.

How big is Oklahoma City?

What’s the history behind Oklahoma City? 

OKC was settled on April 22, 1889, during the historic Land Run, when thousands of settlers rushed to claim plots in what were then known as the “Unassigned Lands.” 
It officially became the state capital on June 10, 1910, replacing Guthrie. 

Is Oklahoma City easy to travel to? 

Yes! Oklahoma City sits on the I-35 Corridor, a major north-south highway connecting it with Texas, Mexico, and Kansas. It’s also served by Will Rogers International Airport (OKC) and has convenient rail and bus options. 

What are some fun and surprising facts? 

  • The shopping cart was invented in Oklahoma City by Sylvan Goldman and used at OKC’s Stanford Food Market in 1937. 

  • The parking meter was invented in Oklahoma City by Carl C. Magee in 1932. 

  • The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden spans 48 hectares and houses 1,900+ animals. 

  • The State Capitol building was designed with a dome but didn’t get one until 2002! 

  • The Boathouse District is an official U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Site for canoe/kayak.

The name “Oklahoma” originates from the Choctaw language — combining “Okla” (people) and “humma” (red), meaning “Red People.”
